Carley and Ash.

Carley and Ash.

First-time Mum Carley invited me to be her doula late in her pregnancy. We first met on a Friday afternoon in winter… Just eight days later, her precious baby Joe was born.

This was the shortest amount of time I’ve had to get to know a family, but our connection was instant and intense (in the best way possible!) In those eight days, the number of challenges and changes to their pregnancy and plans for birth was astounding. Each day, sometimes each hour, something new.

What has stuck with me weren’t the number or nature of the challenges and changes themselves, but how the couple navigated them. Together.

Carley moved through each twist and turn with clarity and quiet resilience. She stayed connected to what mattered most to her, even when things looked different than expected. Her partner Ash stepped into his role with real presence, advocating when needed, asking the right questions and staying grounded through it all. He protected their space and made sure Carley’s voice stayed central in every conversation.

Despite the challenges, oxytocin was ever present; bringing calm, connection and strength through every moment. There was no panic, no lingering overwhelm, just thoughtful decision-making and steady teamwork. Together, they gave themselves the gift of time; time to pause, time to seek a 2nd opinion, time to look at alternatives, time to process and time to make decisions that felt right for them. That space made all the difference.

Supporting Carley and Ash throughout their journey reminded me that birth is rarely linear and that strength often comes from how we adapt, whatever comes. Their ability to stay connected, advocate for themselves and move through uncertainty with calm intention made all the difference. Welcoming baby Joe was the result of that teamwork and trust—and it was an honour to be part of their story.
